DONAVON FRANKENREITER - TRUE SUN GODDonavon Frankenreiter is a true sun god. Donavon has amazing style in the water and in every other aspect of his life. His surfing is extremely unique, powerful and graceful at once. Put him on a skateboard, or music stage ; same thing. Donavon was pioneer in carving out a career in surfing that was based on his free surfing sessions and personal style. And eventually even adding successful music career to the whole blissed-out mix. Back in 2002, I teamed up with my good buddy, designer, Henry Duarte and together we went with a bag of Henry’s amazing jeans etc, to meet up with Donavon at his San Clemente storage space. Inside was a true treasure trove of the most rare, weird, and amazing surfboards from the mid 60’s and 70’s. Along with an incredible collection of skateboards and music equipment. Donavon gathered some of his favorites together and we went of to the near by hill sides and took these images. The story ran that year in BIG magazine’s Surf issue. At the end of the shoot Donavon had grown so attached to the blue and white striped Henry Duarte trousers he had been wearing, that happened to be mine, that he offered me to choose 3 boards to take in return for the pants. What a great trade, I still have and ride everyone of those boards today. Thanks so much Donavon!!
